Top-notch transfer speedsĪnother reason the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 ports on new Surface devices is valuable is because they utilize 40Gbps bandwidth.

Therefore, the fact that the Surface Pro 8 and Laptop Studio are equipped with Thunderbolt 4 ports makes them very flexible, as putting together a dual-monitor setup is easier than ever before with them. Using a pair of the best computer monitors is one of the best ways to enhance your ability to multitask while working in the office or at your home workstation. This will save you a lot of money that you may have otherwise needed to spend on a docking station (though getting one of the best laptop docking stations is still a good idea if you can afford one). Since the Surface Pro 8 and Laptop Studio have two Thunderbolt 4 ports, this gives you the freedom to utilize the other one for other accessories like hard drives or USB hubs. This is a big deal, as it means that you'll now be able to use dual-monitor setups by using a single Thunderbolt 4 port.

I've been good for about a week, with full sleep/restart/shutdown cycles and haven't lost the connection yet.One of the biggest reasons the addition of Thunderbolt 4 on the Surface Pro 8 and Laptop Studio is significant is because Thunderbolt 4 is capable of supporting the use of not one, but two external 4K external monitors. I do know that they tried renewing the DHCP lease previously, and also deleted the Thunderbolt Ethernet connection and created a new one with no success, so maybe the key lies in switching to USB Ethernet and then switching back? I don't have any additional info, or know enough about networking to guess why this procedure worked. It started working, although the USB Ethernet remains broken. He unplugged the USB Ethernet adapter, released the lease to DHCP, and then renewed it with the Thunderbolt adapter plugged in. Both returned the "Cable Unplugged" status in the Network Pref Pane.Īs I stated before, this is on a work laptop, so I don't have the Admin credentials to really do anything, including changing any settings on preference panes.īUT, the IT guy at my work got the Thunderbolt Ethernet working again.

My Thunderbolt Ethernet connection stopped working, and then subsequently the USB to Ethernet connection stopped as well. Re-imaging isn't an option because at some point a restart will be inevitable. printers and servers are accessible only on a local wired network.

That worked flawlessly (no drivers needed) until I restarted, and now the USB/Ethernet connection status remains permanently at Cable Unplugged as well.Īny ideas as to why ethernet would work the first time a cable is plugged in and then never again? I can't roll back to 10.10.4 because of IT policy, and I can't be restricted to wi-fi because my dept. When I plugged it in, the system immediately recognized the new connection and after prompting for Admin credentials, added a USB to Ethernet connection to Network Settings.

Now with Thunderbolt Ethernet not working, I tried using a Belkin USB 2.0 to Ethernet adapter. The Thunderbolt ports work with an external monitor, so bad logic board seems unlikely. The IT guys tried to troubleshoot the issue by removing and adding locations, but had no success. After a shutdown/restart, the MBP no longer recognized a connection (Cable Unplugged Status). The Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter worked the first time it was plugged in. It was recently re-imaged with a fresh 10.10.5 system. Last year, it was running 10.10.4 and had no network issues.

I have a Mid 2014 Retina MBP (11,3), given to me by my work.
